Marginalized Youth in Contemporary Education Contexts
“Marginalized Youth in Contemporary Education Contexts” was held on May 13th, 2009. The symposium included presentations that explored 1) stumbling points and experiences of modern youth, 2) processes by which problems and inequalities are organized in youth and school cultures, 3) how young people are actively negotiate identities and challenges, 4) how practitioners and researchers could become engaged in better means of working with and for young people, and 5) the place of narrative and arts-informed understanding in work with and for youth.
The symposium was hosted by Dr. Kate Tilleczek, Canadian Research Chair, Child and Youth Cultures and Transitions, University of Prince Edward Island and Research Scientist, Community Health Systems Resource Group, Hospital for Sick Children. The keynote addresses were provided by Dr. Andy Furlong, Dr. Jean Mitchell, Dr. Michael Chandler, Dr. Joanna Anneke Rummens, Dr. Molly Andrews and Dr. Katherine Boydell. Discussant pieces were provided by Dr. Bruce Ferguson, Ms. Penny Milton and Harry Snowboy. Most of the speaker’s presentations can be found in the agenda section.
The conference was sponsored by The Canadian Institute for Health Research, Ministry of Education, Hospital for Sick Children and Ontario Mental Health Foundation.
